FAQ

What is water kefir?

Water kefir is a probiotic beverage made by fermenting sugar water with water kefir “grains”. Water kefir “grains” are a symbiotic culture of bacteria and yeast, and are not really actual “grains”. The term “grains” is used to describe what the culture looks like when it is formed. We think they look more like tiny jelly clusters than “grains”. To us, they are just our babies :)

How many strains of beneficial bacteria does it contain?

The number of beneficial strains per batch varies - but generally water kefir has 30-40 different strains of beneficial bacteria.

what’s the difference between water kefir and kombucha?

Both water kefir and kombucha are probiotic drinks made by fermenting sugar water with a SCOBY (Symbiotic Culture Of Bacteria and Yeasts). A few key differences are that kombucha needs tea or vinegar to ferment and water kefir does not, and kombucha takes longer to brew than water kefir.

does it contain alcohol?

All fermented foods have the potential to contain trace amounts of alcohol that is naturally occurring during the fermentation process.

Do i need to keep it in the fridge?

Yes please! Water kefir is alive. It needs to be refrigerated so the beneficial bacteria can get plenty of rest before they end up in your gut where they will come alive and keep you nice and healthy.

How long will my water kefir last?

We have up to a 16 week expiration date on our bottles. If the product is cold and unopened in the fridge it should still be tasty and delicious even after the expiration date. It will eventually become less sweet because it slowly keeps fermenting. If you open it and take a few sips and then close it and keep it cold, you will lose some of the fizz.
